The main purpose of a tent is to provide shelter from wind, water, and cold outdoors. But do you know how a tent manages to block wind, water, and cold, and remain dry and waterproof even in strong winds and rain? This is because tent fabrics are generally treated with waterproofing and hydrostatic pressure resistance.
Why do tents need to be waterproof?
Most tents on the market are made primarily of nylon and polyester. Since tents are used outdoors, changing weather conditions are the biggest test for them. Therefore, they need good waterproofing and considerable hydrostatic pressure resistance to withstand light rain, heavy rain, and even torrential downpours. If water gets inside, it will directly affect the people and belongings inside the tent; therefore, waterproofing is a necessary condition for tents.
Fabric Selection
First, there are many types of textile fabrics available, each with different characteristics. Different fabrics have different features and performance preferences; therefore, choosing the right fabric is the first step in ensuring a waterproof tent. Generally speaking:
1. Polyester is thin and lightweight, high in strength, elastic, abrasion-resistant, and corrosion-resistant, making it suitable for mountaineering and hiking campers.
2. Thick Oxford cloth, suitable for making large tents for drive-through camping or small group use.
This rainproof tent has been specially thickened, is spacious enough to have a bedroom and a living room, and also provides sun protection; it uses a waterproof and mildew-resistant three-layer synthetic technology, with a higher density than traditional single-layer fabrics, and better wind resistance.
